As an adventurer myself I feel for all the men and woman who have joined the nations forces in there quest for adventure, camaraderie and the feeling of being part of a team a movement, and the honour of serving their country. Those men and woman wounded in these conflicts and have endured loss of limb, mental, and physical scarring. Help for heroes is a charity that can help these people continue their lives, the adventurers spirit will never leave you and an important part of help for heroes is there support for Battle Back, a recent UK Military initiative which uses Adventurous Training and Sport in the rehabilitation of seriously injured Service personnel as they return to an active life.

The name Battle Back was coined in 2007 by a team of individuals within the British Military looking at utilising disabled sports programmes as an aid to rehabilitating wounded service personnel.

It quickly became a much wider initiative, incorporating Adventurous Training (AT) – the use of challenging outdoor activities and controlled exposure to risk to improve courage, leadership, fitness and team spirit – and taking a more holistic view of rehabilitation for all injured Service personnel, irrespective of how they were wounded, to complement rehabilitation by the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC) at Headley Court.

Rehabilitation for some individuals can take several years, if you read the case studies you can't fail to realise that this new initiative is making a phenomenal difference in people’s lives, not just physically but also it can be exceptionally beneficial for the emotional wellbeing of the patient.

Lance Corporal Rory Mackenzie, who was injured in a road side bomb attack in Iraq, tells the charity when in hospital he had mentally made a list of things he could never do again, but once out on the slopes skiing he soon started to make a mental list of the things he could potentially do! It is profoundly moving to hear such experiences.

There are also some great testimonials not only from those that participated, but from family members who have said that they have witnessed a huge difference in their loved ones, and for some, the happiest they had seen them since before their injuries.

Its fantastic initiatives like Battle Back that Help for Heroes are proud to support, and to all those who have given so generously, you should feel proud you're making a real difference in peoples lives.
